"All right, we're in Barcelona for the IndieDevDay 2024 and it's really nice to talk about a game which is about Barcelona, but in a futuristic way.
And you guys made a splash early this month when you guys released the Kickstarter and you had a blast, so congratulations on that.
What can you tell us about the whole experience of unveiling the game and then beating Kickstarter so far?
Well, first of all, thank you so much. And to be honest, we kind of had a bit of a scare at the first moments when we launched the Kickstarter because the page actually shut down."

"So it's kind of an inside joke right now that we have inside of the company, but apart from that, we're really, really happy.
We actually reached our goal over 400% of the number that we had in mind, so we are really happy.
The team is actually really excited. We're always thinking of new quests, of new things to connect with the community.
And we're actually really, really happy that everything went so well."

"It's a Metroidvania, but with a couple of twists. Correct me if these are the two main twists or you can, guys, suggest a different one.
One of them is the writing behind the game, which is nuts in terms of AAA writers, veterans from the industry.
Another one is, as I mentioned, that it's sort of neo-Barcelona. So let's talk about these two aspects and then we can discuss some other."

"Okay, yeah, well, the narrative part we have, well, as you can see, we have Anthony [Johnston] and Emma [Beeby] They are just such amazing people and amazing writers that they have a lot of background behind them.
Anthony worked on Dead Space and Resident Evil Village, and Emma is also a well-known novelist.
So they actually worked together behind the scenes of the narrative of the game, which is something that we really wanted to come to life with the game, because it's something that tells us apart from other Metroidvania normal games, because there's this relationship concept, a relationship system that is similar to the Mass Effect."

"I was about to ask about that.
We're big fans of the game, so we wanted to develop it in a different way, so other people could enhance with experience and have their own way of playing the game.
So every time you replay it or you redo it, it's completely different."

"Yeah, because the relationship part of the game is quite important, but also optional, because it can give you objects, upgrades, stuff like that.
So each round you have different relationships, and you can have multiple relationships.
You can improve your build."

"Also because the game is so narrative-driven, we have more dialogues, more stuff, so that people can know a little bit more of the city itself, that it's Neo-Barcelona.
That is the other point that people really like about it.
Which I brought up, so tell me more about Neo-Barcelona."

"Yeah, Neo-Barcelona is one of the... How can I explain that?
How can I explain Neo-Barcelona?
It's like the beautiful part of the place, because it's so diverse, so rich in culture by itself, just as the real city."

"It's also really inspired by cyberpunk art, so it's a new way to explore Barcelona.
With an anime touch to it.
Yeah, also a little bit.
But the fun fact about it is that you can actually explore real places that you see in Barcelona in real life, but with a cyberpunk touch, and in a more futuristic way."

"So the people that have been here actually have a small side quest that is not actually part of the game, but we like to see it as a hidden side quest, because you have Easter eggs of the real Barcelona inside of the game.
So it's actually kind of fun, because we were actually talking about it on the bus earlier."

"We were like, oh, so this is the base for one of the...
This is the tribes, or this is the city.
This is where the Esperanza is.
So you see Barcelona with another eye, and Neo-Barcelona is different."

"Yeah, because, as Raquel said, we have the real landmarks with a twist.
So events before this one, people that have been in Barcelona before, they say, oh, I've been here.
This is the Sagrada Familia."

"Sagrada Familia. I don't know if this is a spoiler.
Is it complete in this game, or is it still under construction those many years after?
Do you really want to know?
Yes."

"No.
It's getting there, right?
We want to be loyal to the real thing, so no, it's not finished.
Not at all.
Yeah."

"Okay, and this was presented with an anime style, with sort of a cutscene that you guys had.
So tell us a little bit more about that sort of artistic approach for the game.
Okay, as for the artistic approach, we wanted to do a different anime, but also pixel art, because we know that pixel art sometimes isn't so catchy to the eye, that a lot of people don't actually give opportunities to games because they seem more retro or have a different style."

"So it was our way of trying to mix and trying to get all of those different layers that they are more driven by more anime style or are more driven by more pixel art.
So the people that fell in love with our trailer and the cinematics are like, I want to try it, so they passed over the pixel art."

"So it's kind of a way to try to connect with more types of players inside of the game.
Interesting. Of course you guys had the Kickstarter.
Yeah.
What's the status of the game?
And if there is anything else that you would like to mention about the Metroidvania mechanics, please do."

"Well, yeah, one of the other tweaks we brought to the table is the main mechanic of the game, that is the quantum blade.
It's a dagger that you can throw, and it sticks to, for example, to a rooftop, to a wall, to a floor, or even to an enemy, you can teleport to it."

"So that's the thing that people really like the most about it, aside from the art itself, because it gives a lot of agility, a lot of movement, a little bit of chaotic ambience to the mechanic itself.
So you can speedrun the game if you want it.
You can be the cool guy doing teleporting stuff everywhere just to do a flashy combo."

"So that's one of the main things we brought to the table too.
And about the status?
About the status...
It's not like the Sagrada Familia. This game will be done."

"Of course. Of course.
We have many, many plans.
We have reached so many stretch goals that actually one of the highlights is, if you like Hollow Knight, we are actually doing a collaboration with one of the singers of Hollow Knight, which we are really actually excited about."

"And also, for those that are more or less more like cozy players, we also have a mechanic where you can pet the dog and the cat, which I had to say, and I'm really sorry, I'm really excited about that mechanic.
That's her favorite stretch goal."

"She's like, oh, we should have dogs to pet because, well...
The others didn't even matter.
Yeah, for her, they didn't matter as much.
I mean, if you can pet the dog, you can pet the cat."

"They can actually appear in the Esperanza in your room, which you can actually personalize because we also have reached another stretch goal where you can personalize the Esperanza, which is really, really nice.
So it's like a Metroidvania, but with different touches of different genres, but it's well bent together."

"So right now, we are really hoping for the game to be able to come out by the end of 2025.
So we are actually excited about that.
If everything goes well, the Kickstarter has gone great.
We're really happy about it."

"So just one last thing is that if you haven't even tried Metroidvanias yet...
And one last thing is that if you haven't played Metroidvanias yet, but are excited to try a game like this one, it's really easy to learn the controls, but it's harder to master them."

"So apart from the difficulties that we're going to have, you're also going to have that small stretch that's going to help you to get inside of the game, but also be able to fully experience the experience of a Metroidvania.
Fantastic. Good luck with the project."

"Looking forward to playing Altered Alma, perhaps later today, but then the full game next year.
